Kayak Trips Helps Travelers

Flights, car rentals, and hotels can be difficult to keep track of while you’re traveling, especially when schedule changes and delays occur. If you have an iPhone, Blackberry, or Android phone, this can come in handy.
  1. Sign up to Kayak.com with your email address, unless you already have an account there. Also download their mobile app for your phone, unless you already have it installed. Launch the Kayak app on your phone, and log in.
  2. When you book travel online (flight/car/hotel), they will email you a confirmation detailing your reservation. Forward that email in its entirety to trips@kayak.com
  3. Within 15 minutes, you should be able to view your trip details on your phone.
It displays your confirmation numbers for easy access when needed, which can come in very handy when checking in at the airport kiosks where a confirmation number is the easiest way to get your boarding pass. They also keep you posted on scheduling changes and send checkin reminders.

If you want to keep family posted on your travel arrangements, forward your confirmation emails to them, and have them re-forward the emails to their trips@kayak.com account. They will receive email updates on the status and arrival times of your flight via email and from the mobile phone’s app.

JVC LT-32P300 32″ LCD 1080p HDTV with 6ms response time, 3 HDMI inputs, 1 VGA input, 2 component video inputs, and Teledock for $424 with free shipping. Native contrast ratio is a little low at 1500:1 true contrast, 3700:1 dynamic. Their “Teledock” is designed for mounting an iPod on the TV, for playing video, audio, and photos while charging the iPod. Page 13 on this Teledock info shows the only iPods compatible with this TV, including iPod, iPod 4G/5G, Touch, Nano 1G/2G/3G/4G, and iPod Mini. The FAQ on page 15 says it is not iPhone compatible.

Even without the iPod dock, $424 is a pretty good deal for a 1080p 32″ TV. Some reviews are good, some reviews are fair.

D-Link DSD-150 looks like an interesting network device, to help filter and protect computers from harmful websites and protect kids from content they shouldn’t see. Looks like a good deal since it usually costs around $70, however best to read the reviews before buying. Reviewers love the content filtering feature to protect their kids from bad web content, but dislike the client web software for spam/spyware filtering.

Newegg.com – BlacX Hard Drive Docking Station $23

posted on HotDealsClub.com – 1 day, 20 hours ago VOTE:
repeat | dead
Thermaltake BlacX USB Docking Station for Serial-ATA Hard Drives for $23 today only. USB cable included. Allows you to plug in (and out) any Serial-ATA hard drive (2.5″ or 3.5″), for storing, backing up, and archiving files. This is really useful for people who need to transfer large amounts of data between locations and don’t want to pay a premium for a portable drive, or for archiving old music, videos, and personal files onto hard drives.

Many large capacity Serial-ATA drives cost around $0.07 to $0.15 per GB (around $90 for a 1000 GB drive). Laptop drives cost about double per GB.

Gone are the days of storing large amounts of cassette tapes of music, DVDs of movies & music files, and videotapes of home videos of the kids. Since everything is digital these days, you can simply store (or backup) all your home movies, digital photos, and music files onto a Serial-ATA hard drive. Eject the drive, place it into an anti-static bag, and keep it on the top shelf of your closet, a locked drawer, or in a safe for safe-keeping. Re-insert the drive whenever you need those files again.

This BlacX (like most USB devices) will copy files at about 22 MBytes/sec, about 1.2GB per minute, or about 70GB per hour. If you plan to fill a 1TB (1000GB) hard drive, expect it to take around 13 hours. If that is too slow and you do have a desktop PC, we strongly recommend looking into a BlacX eSATA hard drive docking station for $33 with free shipping from Chiefvalue. eSATA cable included. Optionally available is Western Digital Black 1TB drive as a bundle on that page for $90 more, a pretty good deal since that drive usually costs $100. This BlacX has both USB and eSATA, and most stores usually sell this BlacX for at least $45. Most desktop PC’s have no eSATA port, but a Serial-ATA to eSATA bracket can be purchased for $7 after shipping fee, or this eSATA bracket (longer internal cables) from Newegg for $11 after shipping fee. Depending on the drive, eSATA transfers at about 40 to 85 MBytes/sec, about 4GB per minute, or about 250GB per hour. An entire 1TB drive can be transferred in about 4 hours. Hot-pluggable eSATA/Serial-ATA is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs.

Those speeds are based on regular 3.5″ drives manufactured within the last 4 years. Tiny laptop 2.5″ drives perform about half to one-third these speeds.

This is really designed with wall-mounting in mind.

Dell.com – Vizio 47″ LCD 1080p HDTV and wall-mount for $850

posted on HotDealsClub.com – 2 days, 20 hours ago VOTE:
repeat | dead
Vizio VT470M 47″ 1080p LCD HDTV for $849 with free shipping. Also includes a tiltable wall-mounting plate. Most stores sell just this TV for at least $100 more, without a wall-mounting plate.

Wall-mounting a TV and hiding the wires look very clean and cool. To install the wall-mounting plate, you need a stud finder to locate at least 2 studs in the wall, a bubble level, and a power drill. Flat plates (like the one included) will work with large TVs and either wood or metal wall studs. Note that putting a 37″ or greater TV on a wall plate with an extendable arm may cause damage to metal studs, which is why a flat plate such as this is safer for mounting a large screen TV in homes with metal studs. Additionally, there may be certain fire-code restrictions when running an electrical cord through the wall, so consulting an electrician is strongly recommended before running wires through the wall. Also if you rent your place rather than own, check with the landlord for permission to drill into the studs.

This is a pre-order, which ships in a few days. A $10 coupon toward a future Amazon game purchase is added to your account 2 days after your order ships.

Immediately after purchase of Bioshock 2, you may receive another coupon code valid for $5 credit on TV video on demand, which is not to be confused with the $10 future game credit which you will receive later.

Bioshock 2 has good previews, and some videos can be seen on their website.

The first Bioshock game was rated as one of the best first-person-shooter games of all time. Since Bioshock 2 is a sequel to the original, playing Bioshock before buying Bioshock 2 is cheap and is recommended. If you don’t like Bioshock, you probably won’t like Bioshock 2.

Garmin Nuvi 285WT Portable/Vehicle GPS for $125 plus $2 shipping, and coupon 24HRSALE23D gives $20 off in the cart. A pretty good since since every other store sells it for at least $125. It includes a MSN traffic subscription for 9 months, afterward a fee applies to continue to receive traffic updates.

If you want lifetime traffic with the GPS, an older model Garmin Nuvi 255WT includes free lifetime traffic from Navteq and goes for $170 at BestBuy stores, or add $7 for home delivery. Apparently MSN and Navteq get their traffic updates from the same source, so the traffic updates should be identical on the 255WT and the 285WT.

Dell AX210 Stereo Speakers for $9 with free shipping. Appears to be a pretty nice deal if you’re looking for simple speakers with good reviews, without paying a lot. It has a regular 3.5mm stereo audio plug, and powers through a computer’s USB port instead of a regular power outlet making it a little easier to use with a desktop or laptop computer. The USB power means it’s harder to use with an iPod or portable music player, so this is really designed for use with a computer.

A free text messaging service which helps answer any question you have. Text a question to CHACHA (242242), and wait up to 5 minutes to receive a response.

Note they are advertising based, and often respond with 1 or 2 texts (one with your answer, another with an ad beginning with a *). One question and two responses total 3 text messages which go against your current cell phone plan, so be aware fees may apply unless you have available texts on your plan.

This could be very useful to help solve problems when no computer is nearby, however keep in mind it is only meant to help and is not a reliable service since some information my not be entirely accurate. In our example, we asked, “how long has the simpsons TV show been on TV?” They replied with an ad beginning with an asterisk (*), then their answer. They answered with a correct date of the show’s first airing, however their answer that it has aired “almost 19 years and is in its 20th season” is incorrect, since December of 1989 was 20 years and 1 month ago and the show is currently half way through its 21st season. Cool service, but just don’t take its word as fact.

Dell.com – Western Digital 500GB Portable USB Drive $72

posted on HotDealsClub.com – 3 weeks, 3 days ago VOTE:
repeat | dead
Western Digital Elements 500GB Portable USB Drive for $80, and coupon HJZT256$XXP$TH gives 5% off ($72). It’s just a 500GB laptop (2.5″) drive inside a shell, and connects to a computer through an included USB to USB-mini cable. Does not require a power cable, and its small size is very portable. Most other stores sell it for around $100.

With small size and portability also comes mediocre performance. All drives like this transfer about 1GB per minute (about 60GB per hour), so it could take several hours if you plan to fill this 500GB drive. If you do need that much storage quickly, might be best to find a Thermaltake BlacX and use a regular 3.5″ Serial-ATA hard drive.

Update (1pm EST): Added coupon HJZT256$XXP$TH to above info, for 5% off.

  • Logitech NX80 Laptop Mouse for $20
  • Gunnar Catalyst Shredder Digital Performance Eyewear for $70 with coupon EMCLMMR48 . Other stores sell it for around $100. We watched Gunnar grow from a small company selling their eyewear to gamers and computer users at trade shows, to selling their products through Newegg and Walmart. Their “Digital Performance” eyewear are meant to reduce eyestrain when staring at a computer screen. This model are not sunglasses, and can actually hurt your eyes if used outdoors, but can help ease the stress on your eyeballs when staring at a computer screen for long periods of time. They do take a couple days to get used to, but otherwise they have great reviews.

Amazon.com – Bioshock 2 game & $10 game credit for $47 or $55

posted on HotDealsClub.com – 3 weeks, 4 days ago VOTE:
repeat | dead
This is a pre-order, which ships on or around February 9. A $10 coupon toward a future Amazon game purchase is added to your account 2 days after Bioshock 2 ships. Immediately after purchase of Bioshock 2, you may receive another coupon code valid for $5 credit on TV video on demand, which is not the $10 future game credit. Each TV video on demand costs about $3 per episode or about $20 to $40 for a season. Their video on demand is for previous TV show seasons; to watch more recent TV seasons, check out free services like NBC.com and Hulu.

Restaurant.com – 80% off of dining certificates, code: INDULGE

New code INDULGE gives 80% off of their prices for restaurant certificates. They sell
  • a $10 restaurant certificate for $3, which comes to $0.60 after applying the coupon.
  • a $25 restaurant certificate priced at $10 comes to $2 after coupon.
  • a $50 restaurant certificate priced at $20 comes to $4 after the coupon.
Apply the coupon in the cart. At the restaurant, factor the tip against the original pre-certificate bill amount, so a $60 bill before applying a $50 certificate would be $10 to the restaurant, and an $11 tip (18% of $60) to the server.

Certificates come via email and must be printed out, and could be good as last minute gifts.

Energizer iPhone Extended Battery for $20 plus $2 shipping. We can vouch that it does almost double the battery life of an iPhone, and very useful when traveling where no iPhone chargers are nearby. It is also nice to be able to detach the extended battery from the phone, allowing you charge just the battery while carrying the phone. It also charges the phone and connects to a computer through a USB-Mini connection, which is a nice alternative when an iPod/iPhone cable is not handy.

Toshiba 32AV502R 32″ LCD 720p HDTV for $350 with free shipping. This is a great deal if you are looking for a 32″ HDTV today. BuyDig also sells it for the same price, and most other stores sell it for around $400.

HDTV prices are slowly falling, especially on 720p displays (because 1080p are in greater demand), so if you can wait a few weeks and don’t think manufacturers will slow production of 32″ 720p displays, you will likely save another $20 or $30 on a 32″ HDTV.
